Descanso Festival Rose Festival Set

2014 Human Vase

2014 Human Vase

Descanso Gardens celebrates America’s favorite flower with the Rose Festival on Saturday and Sunday, May 16 & 17. Enjoy family fun, a lecture on roses, and guided tours of the Descanso rose garden. Ensemble Shakespeare Theater (formerly California Shakespeare Ensemble) will present a spirited tale of the Big Bad Wolf both days. And once again, floral designer Alison Franchi and makeup artist Jennifer Aspinall will turn a model into a “human vase” with makeup and flowers. Activities are free with Descanso admission except where noted.

Here is the event schedule:

• Family Activity, both days, 10am – 1pm: Capture the sweet scent of roses by making potpourri sachets in this hands-on activity for all ages.

• Let’s Talk Roses, Saturday, 10:30 a.m.: Rachel Young, director of horticulture and garden operations, discusses sustainable roses for California gardens.

• “Human Vase” Living Art, both days, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.: Using a model’s body as a canvas adorned with roses, body paint, jewels, and a beautiful gown, floral artist Alison Franchi of La Petite Gardenia and make-up artist Jennifer Aspinall will create the Rose Queen, a “human vase.”

• Patina on the Promenade, both days, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.: Patina will sell specialty cocktails, wine, beer and nonalcoholic beverages, as well as snacks.

• Flower Crown Workshop, Saturday, noon – 1:30 p.m.: Create a flower crown to show off at the Rose Festival! Taught by sculptor-turned-florist Felixa Funes, this workshop is open to all ages and skill levels. Co-produced with People’s Pop-Up. $35 includes materials. Register at www.peoplespopup.com/descanso

• Fairy Tales in the Garden, both days, 1 p.m.: Ensemble Shakespeare Theater performs the spirited and humorous tale of “The Autobiography of Big Bad Wolf” in a family-friendly production on the Main Lawn and the Under the Oaks Theater.

• Rose Garden Walk, both days, 1:30 p.m.: Join this guided walk and learn what’s new in the International Rosarium.
