Summer is quickly coming to a close, so now is the perfect time to take advantage of the outdoors and get some great garden DIY projects out of the way.
Outdoor pots can be used to make stunning flower arrangements for your garden and front porch, and are also good for a myriad of crafts. One such craft is an amazing bubbling fountain that you can make yourself at home.
The first thing you need to do is go buy a pot. Where to go? Right now, we suggest Pacific Outdoor Living. They are moving locations and need to get rid of their inventory, so all pots (and everything else!) in the store are 50% off or more now through August 31st.
First, gather your supplies. You’ll need clear waterproof caulking, a submersible fountain pump, clear vinyl tubing that fits your pump, a few bricks, some rocks, decorative rocks, and of course, your pots.
You will need two pots. This is where you get to be creative, but be sure to fit the smaller pot within the larger one before you leave the store to make sure the sizing is right.
A small hole for the tubing needs to be drilled on the side of the smaller pot; on the larger pot, you can try to pass the wire through the drainage hole at the bottom or drill your own hole near the bottom where it won’t be noticed.
Stack the brick at the base of the interior of the larger pot. Larger rocks go around the brick and help to stabilize the pump, which should be rested securely on the rocks before fitting the smaller pot.
The small pot is then placed on the brick. Connect the tubing to the pump in the big pot through the hole in the small pot. The end of the tube in the small pot is what will make the bubbles.
You want the end of the tube to sit right beneath the water line. You will want to add additional rocks in the small pot to keep the tubing from shifting position. The drilled holes are then sealed with the clear caulk. Let this dry for 48 hours (drying times vary, so be sure to check the packaging and follow their instructions).
You may want to check on your seal once a year and repair any leaks to promote the longevity of your fountain.
Carefully fill your pots using various sizes and colors of decorative rocks, being sure not to cover your pump.
Now you just add water to watch your beautiful fountain come to life. You may need to trim the top of the tubing to get the desired bubbling effect. Be careful not to trim off too much tubing as you can’t put it back.
So grab your keys, hop in your car and head on over to the Pacific Outdoor Living Design Center so you can make your own DIY bubbling fountain.
